Lecture by Traumnovelle (BEL) at MAGAZIN - Space for Contemporary Architecture in Vienna.

"A true architecture of our time will have to redefine itself and to expand its means (…) All are architects. Everything is architecture." Thus Hans Hollein claimed a new role for architecture in his 1968 visual essay Alles ist Architektur. Architecture itself is the embodiment of social, political, economic or otherwise human values, which themselves can be defined as fictions constructing societies. This lecture revisits architectural archetypes and highlights the fictions which surround them, underlining the extent to which they are relative to social contexts. If everything is fiction, everything can, as such, be transformed to shape new fictions for a more ambitious future.

Traumnovelle is a militant faction founded by three Belgian architects: Léone Drapeaud, Manuel L. Fanjul and Johnny Leya (Leya Le Juste). Traumnovelle uses architecture and fiction as analytical, critical and subversive tools to emphasize contemporary issues and dissect their resolutions. Traumnovelle alternates between cynicism and enthusiasm all the while advocating for critical thinking in architecture. Traumnovelle champions a multi-disciplinary approach with architecture at the crossroads. Traumnovelle distances itself from current forms of naive architecture and refuses to glorify the mundane. Traumnovelle sides with those who have not sacrificed ambition and criticism.
