After the success of the first two editions, Biennale i2a evolves in Swiss biennale on urban landscapes to talk about re-use. Conferences, exhibitions, film screenings and urban walks: the convivial environment that distinguishes i2a concentrated in three days of exchange and enrichment on what will be the territory, together with some of the Swiss and international protagonists of the contemporary debate.

Context

Baukultur embraces an extraordinarily broad spectrum of topics. It begins with the territory and the landscape, includes the built, of course, but also the unbuilt, the in-between. Baukultur addresses planning processes and affects how we live together in communities.

This is why Baukultur should be negotiated above and beyond the narrow boundaries of individual disciplines. The Swiss Biennale of the urban landscape offers a unique opportunity to come together and discuss these issues. It unites representatives of Switzerland’s planning associations with researchers, authors and other leading creative figures and experts.

Swiss biennale of the urban landscapes

The Biennale i2a extends over three days and includes several formats for meetings with different focal points. As a regional and national rendez-vous with international charisma, this leading event opens the doors of the Villa Saroli in Lugano to experts in territorial planning and architects, as well as to the wider public.

The event addresses the many different stakeholders involved in the Baukultur process – including players from the media and politicians. With this open-minded attitude, the Biennale i2a contributes to discussions about the social, economic and spatial changes at the heart of today’s society.

Concept 2020

Following the 2016 and 2018 editions focused on the major territorial changes in Switzerland, the 2020 Biennial invites scholars, urbanists, architects and landscape architects to present and discuss projects for the reuse of parts of the city, of buildings and brownfields. Under the banner
of Imagining the Continuity of the territory, speakers will present the methods and processes adopted to build with the objective of sustainable continuity.
In opposition to the ideology of consumerism, production and waste, the i2a Biennale proposes continuity, permanence and renewal. This event invites to project the poetry of memory into the future and to consider the present as a state of transition, to be transformed, distorted and invigorated, rather than destroyed and forgotten. Similar to the 2016 and 2018 editions, in addition to the central panels, a light and carefully curated program of collateral events will open up toward further perspectives: an exhibition, film screenings and urban walks will facilitate an informal exchange of ideas in a stimulating atmosphere. These moments of conviviality shared by participants define the true character of the i2a Biennale.
