Genius loci: Jazyk v architektuře

Two short lectures followed with a panel discussion with Petr Gibas and Ana Cerrano Fernandez-Travanco (online stream).

In the specific context of the post-industrial heritage, we will look at aspects of the use of language in architecture, such as the appropriation of the expression genius loci by real-estate developers, through leaving fragments of facades or chimneys.
We will question its definition by Norberg-Schulz and wonder how it impacts on a possible narrative of artifice/spectacle. How are aesthetics and other categories of experience reflected in the language, and possibly also purposefully translated into it?

Questions will both be asked by the curators of the exhibition Karlin Ex/Change and the audience.

Ana Carreño Fernández-Travanco has a Master in Advanced Architectural Projects (2019) from the Technical School of Architecture of Madrid, where she currently develops her PhD thesis. She has collaborated with practices in Denmark and Spain, developing projects integrating sustainability and rehabilitation. Currently, she develops her activity on her own, combining architecture and photography with research on the built environment and collaborations in various digital publications. The presentation will be online.

Petr Gibas graduated in geography at University College London and obtained his PhD in social anthropology at the Faculty of Humanities, Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic. In his dissertation, he explored post-socialist (post)industrial landscape, its aesthetics and aestheticisation. His researchy interest covers issues of home and its relationship to housing, phenomenological geography, and the city, its planning and the negotiation of city spaces, especially those connected to the experience of homeyness.
