'Site as a Source' | Studio Eidola

In the search for new possibilities of what is capable of constructing from salt and sand. Gaining an appreciation for how air, water, ice and tectonic movements shape the landscape like a sculptor and bringing more attention to this epic history of these seemingly mundane materials.

The “site as a source” approach raises awareness towards natural extractable resources, extraction methods, how and where materials are transported, the local extractive industry and opportunities that can be created by combining the knowledge from different disciplines.

We are questioning how new perspectives could be gained on time and permanence; the origin, lifecycle and disposal of materials; as well as experimental processes focusing on qualities of raw materials.

Studio Eidola is a Zurich based interdisciplinary studio founded by Denizay Apusoglu and Jonas Kissling in 2020. They work at the crossroads between design, architecture and research. Their hands-on approach aims to rediscover the qualities of materials, traditional building techniques and cultural narratives.


In their practice there is a strong emphasis on learning and experimenting with the craft of manufacturing, this entails defining a relationship with the material and its transformation through human interaction.


Their work starts with investigations into cycles and properties of raw materials, geomorphic processes that shape the landscape and longstanding making cultures; and from there it transfers into objects, spaces and installations.
