As part of the BNKR exhibition cycle 2018/2019 SPACE IS THE PLACE, curated by Lukas Feireiss, numerous public events are devoted to the artistic perception and appropriation of space and architecture in addition to individual and group exhibitions. Taking into account theoretically as well as practically founded disciplines, a kind of artistic securing of evidence takes place through which the space surrounding us becomes accessible as an object of investigation in a variety of ways.

Another highlight of the 2018/2019 exhibition cycle is an international symposium of the same name during the opening days of the 58th Venice Art Biennale on 10th May 2019. Together with curator and architectural theorist Beatriz Colomina, artists Olafur Eliasson and Julius von Bismarck as well as architect Sam Chermayeff, Lukas Feireiss explores the experience, design, reflection and imagination of space. Common to these positions is a multi-layered approach to space that addresses, questions and challenges the senses and sensations in very different ways. The symposium will take place in english.

Participants

Julius von Bismarck’s (1983) artistic practice can take on various forms – from installations to happenings, from sculpture to Land Art, associating visual arts to other fields of research and experimentation, such as physical and social sciences. It is defined by an in-depth and complex exploration of the phenomena of perception or the representation and reconstruction of reality.

Sam Chermayeff (1980) is an architect and cofounder of the office June 14 Meyer-Grohbrügge & Chermayeff. Sam worked for SANAA in Tokyo for more than five years, leading projects such as the Serpentine Pavilion and the curation of the Venice Biennale. He has taught at the Dessau Institute of Architecture, Columbia University and currently teaches at Cornell University among other institutions.

Beatriz Colomina (1952) is the Howard Crosby Butler Professor of the History of Architecture at Princeton University and a 2018–2019 fellow at the Wissenschaftskolleg Berlin. She has written and curated extensively on questions of design, art, sexuality and media. Her latest books are “Are We Human? Notes on an Archaeology of Design (2016)”, with Mark Wigley, and “X-Ray Architecture (2019)”.

Olafur Eliasson (1967) founded Studio Olafur Eliasson in Berlin in 1995, which today comprises more than one hundred team members, including craftsmen, architects, archivists, researchers, cooks and specialized technicians. Since the mid-1990s, Eliasson has realized numerous major exhibitions and projects around the world.
